Sustainable Initiatives

Environmental Responsibility

Zuri Zanzibar has been recognized as the first hotel in the world to be awarded by the EarthCheck’s Sustainable Design Gold Certification. The award reflects the resort unwavering commitment to sustainability, by making positive changes to reduce the environmental footprint and improve social impact. Zuri is using its own wells, desalination and treatment plant to provide fresh water, ozone technology and UV lamps in order to reduce the amount of chemicals in the pool, re-using water for irrigation, and computer monitoring to manage water consumption. Sustainable architecture and environmental design principles were followed in order to preserve the landscape and cultural heritage of Zanzibar. The EVENING BREEZE cooling system in the guestrooms uses only 25% of the energy used by standard air-conditioning. Zuri is partnering with local companies - Chako, a company specialized in creating re-cycled products out of waste material and Mwani, a socially responsible business on the east coast of Zanzibar that processes and transforms seaweed into skincare.

Community Minded

Zuri Zanzibar is supporting the Kilindi primary and secondary school. With the help of guests donations, Zuri has successfully opened an English and IT Club regularly ran by one of hotel's experienced team members. Zuri is also working on the completion of the Kilindi Kindergarten for 70 preschoolers in collaboration with a European NGO. Employment priority is given to local students, farmers and vendors as a support of local agriculture in culinary art and purchase of local products.
