About The Hotel

Take a step back to simpler times at Tierra Chiloé, an eco-luxury spa lodge in Chile, where intrepid adventures are coupled with comfort, sea views and the promise of authentic experiences.

Chiloe is a mix of rolling green hills and blue waters on the eastern side, and a rocky coastline pounded by the mighty Pacific Ocean to the west. Isla Grande de Chiloe sprawls for a sizeable 3,241sq miles, made up of watery delights including winding rivers, lakes, lagoons, inlets and coves. Its unique landscape defines the livelihoods of Chilotes and also shelters a fascinating array of flora and fauna. The island is the second largest in South America, cut off from the mainland by the Chacao Canal. Scattered smaller islands emerge from the Sea of Chiloé between the island and the mainland, completing this beautiful Northern Patagonian archipelago.

Each of the 24 guest rooms with a view at Tierra Chiloé Adventure & Spa Hotel offer a deep connection with the nature. Some interconnect to make family apartments, and there are also two suites to choose from. The design and décor of the rooms is inspired by the regional heritage of Chiloé. Hand-crafted furniture and locally woven fabrics are thoughtfully incorporated into each room, a reflection of hotel's bond with the island. The spotlight is on the surroundings, which are on display through large windows that afford views of the lands and ocean beyond.

Sustainable Initiatives

Sustainable architecture

Tierra Chiloé stands out for its eye-catching architecture, which was inspired by the traditional ‘palafitos’ of the island. The hotel was built with the help of the local community, many of whom still work at the hotel. The building’s geometric and sustainable design optimizes the natural energy sources identified during a study of local land conditions. The location and orientation of the structure is such that the light and heat of the sun can be absorbed through thermopanel windows. This, together with ‘Low-E’ technology allows for 66% of energy reduction. The hotel uses a natural cross ventilation, while efficient lighting reduces the use of fossil fuels. Renewable biomass energy is used to heat the hotel, further reducing its carbon footprint.

Environmental Protection and Conservation

In 2011, Chiloé was declared by the FAO (Food and Agricultural Organization for the United Nations) as a ‘Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System’ (GIAHS), recognized for its identity and the important role it plays in conserving both ancient agricultural practices and native crops. Tierra Chiloé maintains biodiversity at 20 hectares of its land. Eight hectares, 50% of which make up part of Tierra's gardens, have been planted with different types of produce including herbs, fruit and vegetables; many of which are native to the region such as hazelnut, nalca and rosehip. The hotel also grows a typical Chilote potatoe and garlic, using greenhouse and organic compost heap. Next to the hotel are the Pullao Wetlands, which boast a rich array of shorebirds. Among them, are the Curved-billed Curlew, Hudsonian Godwit (a North American species), Chilean Flamingo, Chilean Plover and black-necked Swan. Tierra Chiloé is colaborating with the Center for Conservation and Study of Natural Heritage (CECPAN), to promote the sustainable management of these wetlands and preserve their biodiversity.
