Sustainable Initiatives

Environmentally Conscious

The island boasts its own designated recycling plant, reducing the amount of waste produced and separating recyclable items generated from each outlet, public area and other staff areas, which includes cardboard, plastic, glass, metals, used cooking oil, vegetable waste, used batteries and food leftovers. The resort locally sources many ingredients. The resort also has its own island-based herb and vegetable garden that is used to source ingredients for many of the resorts food & beverage outlets and it is a part of many signature dishes. All the bottles, cardboard, foam boxes, metals, coppers etc. are crushed separately with the crusher machine and sent to the local garbage island (Thilafushi) for reuse. Island's smart irrigation technology is helping to monitor weather, soil conditions, evaporation and plant water use. It automatically adjusts the watering schedule to actual conditions of the site.

Sustainable architecture

The St. Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort incorporates energy efficiency into the design of the resort products and services. Island restaurant, ALBA, is based on upcycling. The hanging lamps found within the restaurant are made from repurposed Indian pots, while recycled shells were used to make the bead lamps found along the verandah. Various materials used throughout the resort reflects textures and patterns found on the island, including a coral chandelier, headboards made of recycled glass beads, artwork created from salvaged wood and soft fabric that replicates ripples of water. To withhold a consistency of sustainable practices throughout the resort, all villas come equipped with high-efficiency lighting which produce equivalent lighting and consume 95% less electricity than incandescent bulbs.
