About The Hotel

Australia’s third largest island, Kangaroo Island sits a mere 15km from the shores of South Australia on the mainland. Spanning 155km in length by 55km in width, and covering some 4,500 sq km, Kangaroo Island offers the best of the mainland on a smaller scale. Boasting twenty-one national and conservation parks, Kangaroo Island has established itself as a premiere destination for nature lovers.Widely acclaimed as Australia’s Galapagos, Kangaroo Island is home to an abundance of native wildlife and spectacular natural attractions. Guests wander among sea lions lolling on the beach, walk the Remarkable Rocks or see fur seals frolicking in the Southern Ocean.

Two years after Baillie Lodges’ award-winning flagship property Southern Ocean Lodge was razed in the Kangaroo Island (KI) bushfires, the rebuild of the globally celebrated luxury lodge has commenced. Dubbed ‘SOL 2.0’, the new-look Southern Ocean Lodge is slated to open in the second half of 2023. SOL 2.0 will largely maintain the original lodge footprint with 25 luxurious guest suites easing along the coastline. In a deft design manoeuvre, each of the suites has been reoriented to offer even better views of the ocean and coastal wilderness, where the eye was always drawn to the glorious sunrise, sea mists and thundering cobalt waves breaking on the shore.

Environmental Protection and Conservation

Environmental sustainability is core to the design of SOL 2.0 with significant hybrid solar and battery infrastructure allowing the luxury lodge to continue to run off grid in its remote location on KI’s southwestern coast while reducing diesel fuel consumption by more than 50 percent. Investment in a larger reverse osmosis system sees the ability to use solar power to convert bore water to fresh water and storage capacity has been increased to 5.8million litres of potable water. Rainsavers installed on each tank will increase rainwater harvesting to some 12000L of pure, drinkable rainwater from every millilitre that falls on the site. Water is harvested from all roof surfaces at Southern Ocean Lodge and stored in tanks with a total capacity in excess of 1.5 million litres. A key aim is to have the property rainwater self-sufficient nine out of every ten years. The team has been clearing coastal mallee from a 20-metre wilderness buffer around the lodge and replanting the area with fire-retardant succulents and native juniper. The bushfire sprinkler system will be state of the art and pressurised by electric pumps and in the unlikely event of a power outage – a diesel pump will be on automatic standby.
