Coral Conservation

In 2022, the Soneva Foundation together with Coralive launched one of the biggest coral restoration programmes in the world, located onsite at Soneva Fushi in the Maldives’ Baa Atoll. With a one hectare coral farm consisting of 432 tables with 120 coral fragments each, Soneva aims to propagate 50,000 coral fragments each year. Cultivating ‘corals of opportunity’ – corals that have been broken or damaged by storms, or rescued from sites where they are about to be destroyed – the aim is to regenerate the reef back to the state in which it existed 25 years ago, covering out-planted corals across 20 hectares over the next decade. A coral table is 1.2m x 1.2m and nurses on average 120 corals. Mineral Accretion Technology helps the corals to grow faster and become more resilient to bleaching events. Guests are incouraged to adopt a coral table - Soneva team will take care of the corals until they are ready to be planted out on the reef, which will be after approximately one year. Coral table can be also personalized with your name of choice.

Environmental and Social Responsibility

In 2008, Soneva Jani has introduced a 2% environmental levy on all stays. This goes towards the Soneva Foundation, which invests in a variety of projects that have a positive environmental, social and economic impact, offsetting direct and indirect carbon emissions, such as resort activities and guest flights. A Soneva Foundation initiative, the Myanmar Stoves Campaign is the country’s first carbon project with Gold Standard certification. Soneva Foundation subsidised the distribution of more than 36,000 fuel-efficient cooking stoves to families in Myanmar and Darfur. Each stove saves 2.5 tonnes of wood per year, reducing pressure on forests and reducing household expenditure. As well as lowering the health risks associated with indoor cooking, each stove also lowers air pollution by 80%, with a 60% reduction in carbon emissions per stove per year.
