Sustainable Initiatives

Environmental Protection

The flora of Ibiza's rolling hills and groves, together with the marine fauna native to its coastal coves and bays offer an incomparable biodiversity. Six Senses Ibiza will be the first sustainable BREEAM certified resort in the Balearics. Through careful consideration of the effects that operating systems, materials and purchasing policies have on the environment, Six Senses Ibiza will continue to develop new initiatives and procedures to not just minimize ecological impact but act as a regenerative force for good too. By working with local partners such as the Ibiza Preservation Fund, important preservation and biodiversity projects can continue on land and at sea. The resort will also contribute 0.5 percent of their operating revenue to the Six Senses Sustainability Fund, which supports local foundations that share the same values in terms of environmental and community responsibility. Six Senses Ibiza has its own farm located 15 minutes away, near the village of Santa Gertrudis. The farm is a true labor of love, where healthy, organic produce is grown and delivered fresh to be enjoyed in the resort’s restaurants. To help vegetables and fruit grow in a healthy way, they produce their own natural fertilizers and herbicides.

Posidonia Replanting Project

In collaboration with IbizaPreservation Six Senses supports the Posidonia project. Posidonia oceanica, a local sea grass, forms underground meadows of crucial importance for marine ecosystems. These meadows are the main carbon sink in the Mediterranean. They oxygenate and purify the waters, prevent coastal erosion and provide a refuge for the rearing of young fish of great importance to fisheries. Ibiza and Formentera have Posidonia meadows up to 80,000-100,000 years old that have been declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. Uncontrolled anchoring of boats, pollution and coastal urbanization have destroyed thousands of square meters of Posidonia, a loss that has serious impacts on the ecosystem. In 2021, 10.000 square meters of seagrass were restored through replanting between Formentera and Mallorca.

Hedgehog Sanctuary

Six Senses supports a local hedgehog sanctuary that takes care of the spiky little animals populating the island when injured or in need. To celebrate the local hedgehog, a hedgehog soft toy created by local artists is placed in every guest room. It can be purchased and, by buying it, guests also contribute to the sanctuary through our Sustainability Fund.

Plastic free Ibiza

Six Senses supports IBI Foundation, which is committed to removing plastics from the ocean around Ibiza and the Balearic Islands. Thanks to its solar-powered catamaran with integrated collecting net, they can collect plastic floating on the surface of the ocean. In 2021, 1.754 kilograms of plastic were removed from the Ibizan coast.
