Sustainable Initiatives

Environmental Protection

Mandarin Oriental complies with environmental laws and regulations, setting goals and monitoring progress toward energy, carbon, water and waste reduction, as well as responsible procurement. Since 2012 the hotel chain has been adopting industry best practices, and embracing innovation to enhance operational efficiency. Mandarin Oriental currently utilises a dedicated online sustainability data management system to streamline data collection and monitor progress in real-time. In 2019, the hotels reported a significant reduction of approximately one fifth of environmental footprint intensities when compared to baseline years. Over the years, consistent efforts have been made to switch to LED lighting. Currently, 68% of lighting needs are fulfilled by LED lighting. Most of hotels are fully dependent on municipal water supplies, and rely partially on other sources of water including surface water, groundwater and desalinated water. Mandarin Oriental is committed to raising awareness and playing a part in boosting bee populations. Around 30% of the hotels have successfully invested in beekeeping and the remaining hotels have their beekeeping projects planned.
