Sustainable Initiatives

Environmental Responsibility

La Sultana Oualidia is 100% self-sufficient. La Sultana’s Terroir Cuisine philosophy is the belief that the flavours and ingredients are direct results of the climate, geography and farming practices native to Morocco, and thus express a sense of place. Honouring this philosophy, local and seasonal ingredients are sourced from a small network of Slow Food producers, including saffron from Taliouine, salt from Zerradoun, cumin from Alnif and Argan oil from Tensift-El Haouz, whilst fish and meat options are also carefully sourced from local-ethical producers. To offer the best quality to all hotel's guests, all ingrediends are handpicked by the best local suppliers in the field who select organic products whenever possible to encourage sustainable agricultural practices. In order to promote Moroccan creativity & design, in the hotel boutiques only local and hand-made goods are displayed. La Sultana also has a display of handmade items supplied by charities supported by the hotel. The hotel produces its own organic vegetables in a communal garden in Marrakesh as well as at private land at La Sultana Oualidia. The hotel uses chemical-free fertilizers for growing delicious, organic vegetables. Thanks to their vegetable patch the hotel naturally offers a more plant-based dish options and has increased vegetarian and vegan selections to offer a more sustainable cuisine.

Social Responsibility

Each Stay at La Sultana Marrakesh & La Sultana Oualidia drives positive change for natural and cultural conservation in Morocco through hotels commitments to select local charities. As a company La Sultana provides a regular financial contribution and promotes the actions of a national charitiy - Les Enfants de Dar Bouidar. Starting with 2022, La Sultana allocates 50% of carbon emissions costs to earth-friendly projects and charities. Their financial contribution fosters activities that have positive impacts for Moroccan people and communities. Across La Sultana Marrakesh & La Sultana Oualidia, over two hundred people from local communities are employed and are offered add-on health, security and retirement schemes.

Sustainable architecture

Made from local stones, La Sultana Oualidia was carefully built in order to blend in with its natural surroundings and minimize its visual impact on the environment. This is the visible part of this eco-friendly building; the main aspect is that it recycles 100% of the water used. Between salt marshes and market gardens, oyster beds and local fisheries, La Sultana Oualidia unfurls its architecture of carved stone. Surrounded by its botanical collections, the hotel is a subtle, harmonious balance between an ecological approach and a commitment to architecture. A Babylon of prickly pears, palms, agaves, euphorbia, cereiform cacti, yuccas and aloes.
