About The Hotel

Set right on the edge of Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, where more than a third of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas find refuge, Singita Kwitonda Lodge’s unrivalled position puts lifechanging gorilla trekking experiences within easy reach. Each of the eight luxurious suites features a private heated plunge pool, wellness treatment area, in- and outdoor fireplaces and large timber-framed windows that welcome breathtaking scenery and volcano views inside.

Created in response to its dramatic setting, the lodge includes elements such as woven ceilings and hand-fired terracotta brickwork crafted by local artisans, while a dedicated Conservation Room and on-site nursery and vegetable garden – which provides fresh produce for Kwitonda’s farm-to-table food journey – further enhances the experience. Offering guests a nurturing space within which to contemplate their encounters with the remarkable “gentle giants of the forest”, the lodge envelopes them in a sanctuary of warmth, stillness & solitude.

Sustainable architecture

At Singita Kwitonda Lodge every element of the build was carefully researched and considered, from the local bricks and volcanic rock used to build the walls, to the mechanical ventilation system which draws in fresh air to ventilate and cool the rooms, eliminating the need for carbon-heavy air conditioning. Skylights, double-glazed windows, and wall and roof insulation are some of the other features that reduce energy consumption. Steel frame structures have reduced the use of environmentally detrimental concrete by up to 50%; heat pump and solar water heater hybrid systems provide underfloor heating, domestic hot water and pool heating; and the landscaping strictly makes use of native plant species. Sustainable operations across all lodges and camps play a major role in achieving Singita's overall purpose to preserve and protect large areas of African wilderness for future generations. Singita Volcanoes National Park and the 178 acres of land on which it is located sets an industry-wide benchmark for lodge design and sustainability. It also reaffirms Singita's commitment to reduce ecological footprint, meet the needs and improve the well-being of the staff, guests and neighbouring communities.

Environmental Responsibility

Kwitonda Lodge's on-site nursery was borne from the commitment to help reforest, rehabilitate and maintain the habitat of Rwanda’s endangered mountain gorillas. Initially, 60,000 saplings were bought from local growers and earmarked for the 178 acres of land Singita Volcanoes National Park sits on. This number quickly grew to 250,000 saplings, even before the lodge opened, and continues to increase as the lodge keeps expanding its reforestation efforts in the area. Whether you opt for a gentle stroll along the rows of new trees, past the glorious fragrances of flourishing herbs or through the farm-to-table chef’s garden filled with fresh vegetables, it’s bound to inspire and delight in equal measure. Providing an authentic taste of Rwanda’s offerings, Singita's garden includes a teahouse serving fresh herbal brews, as well as local artisans such as a basket weaver, seamstress and stick carver showcasing the intricacies of their craft.

Community Empowerment

A visit to the Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village in nearby Kinigi gives guests the special chance to spend time with exceptionally welcoming local communities and to experience their traditional lifestyle and culture. Ancient traditions of honour and hospitality run strong here. Here guests can enjoy local-guided walks and home visits, displays of traditional dance and song, and fascinating stories told by proud and enthusiastic folk. Visitors can engage in pottery making lessons and shouldn’t leave the village without having had a taste of local food and locally brewed banana beer.
