Sustainable Initiatives

Environmental Protection and Conservation

The entire resort is powered with solar-generated energy, all food waste is recycled and wastewater used for irrigation. The resort runs on 100% natural energy, recycles 100% of the food waste and wastewater, with 75% of the archipelago remaining undeveloped. Resort's decisions on design, infrastructure and operations have created a model of environmental stewardship. Islas Secas is protected under Panamanian law, and hotel's dedicated conservation and research programs reflect their commitment to preserve the archipelago and wider area’s exceptional biodiversity. Islas Secas dehydrates all food leftovers, which are then composted and turned into fertilizer, resulting in a circular, zero-waste system. Plans are also underway to create an organic on-island farm, using recycled wastewater for irrigation and featuring a robust composting program. Isla Secas is working to eliminate all single-use plastics from the property, and all single-use plastic bottles have been replaced with reusable water bottles, provided to each guest upon arrival. All water is reclaimed, treated without chlorination and then used for irrigation, minimizing any negative impact on the groundwater supply. An entire eco resort is powered by renewable solar energy from 1,500 photovoltaic panels through a 300-meter-long solar array.
