Sustainable Initiatives

Environmental Responsibility

Staying true to core values, Six Senses Uluwatu, Bali has implemented a series of sustainability initiatives designed to reduce the energy, water and waste involved with every guest’s stay. The hotel actively raises awareness in their local communities on being environmentally and socially responsible, and welcome all guests and hosts to learn more during garden tours, meeting out friendly chicken & goats, learning about composting, and workshops in their Earth Lab. Food and landscaping waste is fed to resort's chickens and goats, and they collect the manure for their own organic garden. Kitchen oil is converted to biodiesel. Grey and black water is treated onsite and then mixed with rainwater catchment for reuse in landscape gardening and fire hydrant storage. Well water from the resort’s own source is purified with sand filters and reverse osmosis filters before being bottled on site.

Culture and Conservation

Bali Starling bird (Leucopsar rothschildi) has been the official mascot of Bali since 1991. However, it has been declared as critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature since 1994 and the main reason for its decline has been the wholesale removal of the bird from its natural habitat to Europe, the loss of its habitat and the continued poaching for the pet trade. Six Senses Uluwatu supports Begawan Foundation, an NGO focusing on breeding and release programs of Bali Starling birds. Between 1999 and 2005, the foundation’s captive population grew from four to 97 birds, and in total. Between 2005 and 2012, around 80 Bali Starlings were released into the wild and another 28 birds were released by the end of 2021.

Plastic-free philosophy

At Six Senses, this means going beyond banning single-use plastic and unnecessary waste by implementing a policy to become Zero Waste and Plastic Free, uncovering solutions that have not yet been created and promoting a de-plasticized lifestyle by providing more sustainable alternatives. Joining the Global Tourism Plastics Initiative is another step in this direction to address the root causes of plastic pollution. It enables businesses and governments to take concerted action and lead by example. The resort liaises with suppliers to make their packaging more sustainable, requesting they eliminate unnecessary materials such as plastic bags or wrapping. Where possible the hotel purchases in bulk and use a system of returnable boxes and containers. In food production, plastic bags and plastic film is replaced with washable bins or linen bags.
